More About This Trail
General description: A village walk through a historic seaside town. Belfast is rich in history and home to one of the few fish canneries still operating on the Maine coast. This old shipbuilding town once boasted of 11 boatyards, from which 360 ships took to the waves. The homes of sea captains are prominent features. Even if you have never seen a sea captain's home, you will instantly recognize one, since the glassed in observation rooms called 'widow's walks" are hard to miss. The town is also one of the state's newest and most exciting arts communities. General location: Belfast, in Waldo County, is at almost the geographic center of the Maine coast.
