In the beginning...
Brachiopods are the most abundant fossil in Maine and date
440-500 million years ago. They were marine, two-shelled organisms resembling
clams that lived in both shallow and deep water environments. They can be found
on Belfast beaches, Moose Point State Park and Bayside. Look for dark, black
rocks with half-moon indentations, especially easy to see when the light rakes
across the beach at a low angle.
