Celene Farris
An oil painter for 30 years, Celene Farris has shown extensively in galleries and juried art shows from Florida to Maine. She has received numerous awards and her work has been featured on the cover of two publications, The 2003 Belfast Chamber of Commerce Guide and the Maine travel guide, Captain D Downeast. She was voted the best artist in Waldo County, Maine, by The Citizen's "Best of the Best 2008 Readers Poll.” Celene grew up in the 1950’s in Manchester, Connecticut, a small town bordered by farms and rolling tobacco fields. This instilled in her a love of nature and an appreciation of simpler times. A serious artist, she is basically self-taught and has studied under various artists such as David Curtis and Barbara Applegate. She received a certificate in Advanced Oil Painting from The North Light Art School in Cincinnati. “Because both my parents were artists and musicians, art and music have always been an important part of my life.” A Maine resident for more than 35 years, she resides with her family in Morrill, Maine, a small, rural community situated among the farms and rolling hills that she loves. This quiet life is reflected in her paintings. "After painting coastal scenes for several years, I began to explore the quiet, peaceful interior of Maine so often overlooked by visitors to our beautiful state. It was in the deep forests, the sunny country lanes and along the banks of quiet streams where I found the true depth of Maine. I have a deep respect for the land and in my landscapes I try to capture the quiet strength and beauty that is so typical of our Maine countryside. One day, by an old farmhouse, I noticed an old copper kettle glowing in the sunlight. I knew that I had to try to capture that special light and feeling. Still-life paintings featuring timeworn objects and glass, copper or brass are among my favorite subjects. In these objects I feel a sense of the past and a respect for the people who used them. I am drawn to traditional oil paintings and the Chiaroscuro style of strong lights, dark shadows and saturated colors. I try to capture that certain quality of light and mood that makes us pause and look again, and in doing so, makes us see a beauty we so often overlook. I am extremely pleased to be chosen as the number one artist in Waldo County by The Citizen's "Best of the Best 2008 Readers Poll." It is an honor I will always treasure. I sincerely thank all those who made this possible" Farris paints in the traditional, old world style, using saturated colors and strong contrasts. To keep her work fresh, she attends workshops and seminars by various artists. She continues to teach classes and workshops. She is the co-owner of The Working Art Gallery in Belfast, Maine. You may visit her websites at www.CeleneFarris.com and www.TheWorkingArtGallery.com.
